Methods to generate WUs with a defined lenght

Posted 2129 days ago by ktf There already are numberous discussions about the strange lenght of WUs from ABC@home. I've heard this problem is not easy to catch, but I think there must be a way to solve this, because when chrunching, you can see progress at all. I mean, if you can't predict the lenght of a WU, how can there ever be a progress bar? So there should be a way to generate WU's that are of a defined lenght. These can be generated on the server with some kind of pre-calculation. In that case, there should be a cache with WU's. The problem is the server load. (Of course I don't know if that will be a problem, I don't know how that application would function) If that would use to much of the server, you can make another application for ABC@home that calculates the ranges that match the requested lenght, which will be calculated on several computers which are normally chrunchin normal ABC WUs Another method is to stop the calculation after using a defined number of FLOPS or something like that. The problem with that is that the 2 computers chrunching should stop at the same moment, what would be hard to program I think. Beside of that, there would be strange gaps between processed numbers: when I stop chrunching, the other numbers have to calculated, while the next group of numbers is already being calculated. I hope you can read and understand it, (I'm not native) and that I'm not too late with it. |

Posted 2132 days ago by ktf I think it will be shorter, because of the launch of a official BOINC Linux 64-bit client. 64-bit doubles searching speed. Furthermore, computer power increases exponentially and the number of participants is also growing ;) |
