1) Message boards : Problems : Pending... (Message 8538)

Yeah, there's quite a few like that in my list of pending jobs as well. Haven't had anything granted for at least 24 hours.

Perhaps the validator isn't working.

I don't know the configuration of the dies, other than that they appear to sit beside each other (4 in a row).

On my quads, temps tend to be highest on cores 0 and 3 - not sure whether that's the inside or outside ones.

Right now core temps (degrees Celcius) are:

Q6600 (liquid cooled) at 3.6GHz: 61 - 58 - 54 - 62
Q6600 (air cooled) at 3.0GHz: 62 - 57 - 60 - 61

So in both cases, 0 and 3 are the hottest (albeit marginal on the slower one)

I don't think I've had many errors (except ABC work units crashing when the network goes down occasionally), though I don't look at each and every work unit.

Put another way, it's a long time crunching for a small job. Your 41 hour work unit was paired with my Q6600 which usually runs at 3.0 GHz or more. It's running 64 bit Linux so it can crunch ABC work units quite fast.

I'm not familiar with the Mac so don't know whether it's supposed to be so much less powerful - maybe someone else with a similar Mac can do some comparisons.

On the face of it, either your Mac has issues with ABC@home (refer comment above re comparisons) or the Mac application is just slow - I don't know.

Maybe you were looking for this one? ;-)

Nope.

At any rate, it would appear that the duration of work units is still quite variable but something has been done about the very short (under a minute) work units. Most of the other work units have increased in duration as well (a few hours on a fast computer is quite common now).

Clownius, has anyone directly connected to the project told you the short ones are being identified and then filtered? Maybe I missed a post from an admin?

I'm not Clownius, but I do recall seeing either a news item or post from Hendrik in which he talked about work units being tested before release to filter out the very short ones. If I can find the post or news item, I'll let you know where it is.

EDIT: Hmm, can't find it. Maybe we (Clownius and I) are mistaken and the testing was on another project?

How hard would it be to upgrade a version of the boinc server to support separate settings for Connect to network about every and Maintain enough work for an additional/Enforced by version 5.10+?

These settings are only client-related, so no matter which version the server uses.
You can set them in your BOINC Manager's preferences dialog, or, since these settings are global, set them in BAM! or any project you participate in.

If you have a look around at other projects, you will see that it's not only something at the client end. Yes, it can be done in the latest clients, through BOINC Manager, but try changing muleiple hosts (including those that are running command-line only and need to be controlled from another host).

The server side option makes it easy to update all hosts at one venue.
7) Message boards : Number crunching : how to rise triplet counts (Message 6768)

Dear Downius¨

I apreciate your input and just wanted to explain my motives. I retracted because i dont want that anybody unvoluntarily suffers from colateral damage but still the main issue is valid for me. As the project asked the public for help the project itself got a public good and has to surrender his rules to the basic rules of the public.
No " greater good " can ever justify the elimination of basic rights.Fairnes is one of those basic rights.
We are partners not working slaves in this.
best regards and happy crunching

Thing is, not many people have complained about this issue. My computers have done a lot of crunching for the project and it doesn't worry me that I've only been credited with finding 51,952 triplets when in reality it may have been a lot more.

I understand it's a big issue to you (you have said so in a number of different topics), but Hendrik has already explained they will change it if and when they can. I am sure their "to do list" has many other important issues on it. I doubt they will drop everything else to satisfy one participant's wishes.
8) Message boards : Number crunching : moving (Message 6758)
Posted 2041 days ago by Profile Webmaster Yoda
I'm going to move to another country, so I won't have much time for abc anymore. The project will continue though, there are more people besides me involved.
I'd thought it would be better to let you guys know.

Thanks for all you have done, Hendrik. Despite some minor hiccups here and there, this is IMO a well run project and I will continue to support it.

So, who will take over the day to day running of ABC@home?
9) Message boards : Number crunching : Pending credit (Message 6710)
Posted 2044 days ago by Profile Webmaster Yoda
Just had a look at my fastest computer's results and the average time to complete a work unit (based on the last 100 results returned) is 42 minutes. It's a Core 2 Quad running at 3.2GHz with 64bit Linux and DDR2/800 RAM at 4-4-4-12.

While I'm sure there are some faster systems out there, my cores would only be able to do approx. 35 work units a day (on average) by this figure.

Maybe the daily quota of 500 per CPU is a little too high now (it could take a fast system 2 weeks to complete what they download in one day). I think 50 to 100 would be a more realistic number at the moment (at 100, it's still 3 days worth of work).

This would not solve the issue with pending credits (yes, some of us do care about that) but may go some way towards reducing the number of results that will need to be re-issued due to hosts failing to meet the deadline (or being detached with hundreds of WU in their queue).
10) Message boards : Problems : can't get new work units (Message 6674)
Posted 2046 days ago by Profile Webmaster Yoda
i use boinc manager under ubuntu linux...i am not getting any new work units...when i connect with the server, these are the messages i keep getting:

Tue 16 Oct 2007 11:43:31 PM CDT|ABC@home|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)

BOINC on your computer is not asking for work, so it's not getting any. Could be a case of long term debt on another project you have running on that same computer. Could also be that BOINC thinks it has enough to cover your set preferences.
