What are the Characteristics of a Good Day Care Director?

April 2, 2018 by Lauren Palmer

Child care directors are often called to oversee the operations of day care facilities. Their role includes the supervision of staff, the management of finances and the development of specialized programs. Moreover, day care directors ensure that day care facilities comply with relevant laws and regulations. This work is challenging because it involves numerous bureaucratic processes in addition to dealing with diverse interests and personalities. Consequently, day care directors require a specific set of characteristics to overcome these challenges. Here are some of them:

Experienced, Trained and Educated

Managerial skills are critical when it comes to this job. For example, day care directors control and coordinate the activities of staff members who handle kids in addition to workers who deal with administrative duties at the day care facility. These activities must proceed independently, but they have to be in line with a specific goal. Additionally, an in-depth understanding of the needs of a child and the development processes that kids go through is necessary.

Proactive and Decisive

Education and learning institutions are facing a myriad of challenges in today’s society. They also have to deal with societal issues as well. Unfortunate situations are likely to arise in day care facilities at some point.

For example, there might be times where children will show signs of abuse at home. Day care directors have to be proactive in such cases. They need to talk to the parents or the relevant authorities to protect the dignity of the child in addition to making sure that the child is okay physically, emotionally, and mentally.

In some cases, the staff hired by the day care center may act unkindly towards the children or their parents. For example, some staff members might use abusive language when speaking to them. Waiting for complaints to accumulate before taking action is a bad idea. You’ll have to take decisive steps to protect the child and to ensure that staff members behave appropriately towards parents and other members of staff at the facility.

Patience, Good Communication Skills and Approachability

Conflicts are likely in this line of work. For example, day care directors may differ with parents on some issues. Stubborn kids may cause mayhem in the day care center from time to time. Moreover, some staff members may exhibit signs of laziness while others will come to work late. Handling these issues takes a lot of patience.

You also have to be a mediator in other instances. That means you have to be good at bringing people together. Communication skills are critical for doing that. In other words, you have to talk to each person in a constructive way that encourages reconciliation while addressing the mistakes that each party made.

Finally, approachability is critical as a day care center director. For example, parents may feel the need to talk to you about issues that they are facing at home. Teachers may have deeply rooted problems with their colleagues, and kids may be hiding something troubling. Approaching you is only possible if you are an approachable person.

A career as a day care director is a great way to make a difference in a children’s lives and guide them through their development. However, you have to make sure you have the skills and aptitudes needed for the job.
