A Homeowner’s Official Summer Maintenance Checklist

Summer has already started to rear its head, meaning the chores around the house are changing. You’re only a few weeks away from sweltering temperatures, hurricane threats and bug invasions, so it’s important to get out that summer maintenance checklist and start checking off the tasks one by one. However, if you’re new to owning a home, you might not be quite sure what should be on that checklist to begin with. In that case, read on below for a list of chores you need to do around your property before the summer heatwave begins.

Schedule an air conditioning tune up

One of the very first things you should check off your maintenance checklist is getting your air conditioning unit inspected before the heat of the summer sets in. If you check your HVAC system today and find that it isn’t working up to par, it will be easier to find a reputable heating & cooling repair company to come in and repair or replace it for you. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that your unit will go out in the middle of a heatwave leaving you and your family sitting in the heat until a HVAC repairman can get out to fix it for you.

Have the roof inspected

Once you are positive your AC unit is good for the summer months, then it’s time to move onto having your roof inspected by a reputable company such as Everlast II™, to ensure you have no leaks or missing shingles that will allow the heat to seep into your home. Remember, the rainy season has just ended, and your roof hasn’t been properly inspected or cleaned all winter long. Call in a reputable company and have it inspected right away.

Perform a window check

After the long winter, it’s time to perform a window check to ensure your home can keep the heat at bay during the hot season. Check the sealants around your window sills, as well as checking for any cracks that may have occurred over the long winter months. This is a great time to inspect and replace window screens that might have holes or cracks in them as well, so you can open your windows to the gentle breezes that waft through every now and then.

Start preparing the pool

Summer is pool season and with the extreme heat you want it to be ready to go when the temperature starts to rise. Make sure that you clean the pool, level it and treat it with chemicals. Don’t forget to check the pump, so it will be sparkling clean and ready to cool you off once the heatwave begins.

Reverse the ceiling fans

If you have ceiling fans in your home, you already know that they can cut down on your energy bills quite a bit. However, you need to remember to reverse them in the summertime so they can draw the heat out of your home. Reversing the airflow causes a wind chill effect that will not only lower your bill but keep you and your family cooler as well.

Call in pest control

For the most part pests hibernate during the winter months, however, the ants, spiders and mosquitoes will come out in full force once the summer hits. Make sure that you call your pest control company to come out and spray your home and property to prevent an infestation from occurring.

These are just a few of the things you need to have on your maintenance checklist as the summer begins. Check off your tasks, then sit back and enjoy all the fun that summertime brings.
