Choosing the Most Suitable Furniture for Your Outdoor Area

January 31, 2018 by Lauren Palmer

If you’ve decided to invest in new outdoor furniture for your backyard or an apartment patio, there are a number of things to consider before you make a decision. From wicker outdoor lounges through to wooden recliners, there are many styles and materials available in regards to outdoor furniture, so it’s important to do a little research and put in some effort so you can choose the right piece for your individual needs. This article provides some top tips to help you make a wise choice.

Durability

One of the main things to take into consideration is the durability of outdoor furniture. Whether you’re buying wicker outdoor lounges or wrought iron tables, the material that the furniture is made out of is an important factor. Due to the fact that it’s outdoor furniture, it will likely be subjected to the elements, which can mean rain, hail and strong sunshine depending on where you live.

When looking for outdoor furniture, it’s wise to put a decent amount of thought into the type of material you choose. There are many different types of materials available, including plastic, wood, wicker and wrought iron. Each of these materials has its own set of pros and cons:

  • Plastic – Plastic is a popular choice, as it’s a low maintenance and lightweight material that’s relatively easy to move around. You could also build it yourself with some cut to size perspex. However, it can fade and crack over time if left in the sun for too long.
  • Wrought Iron – Wrought iron is extremely durable and strong and can last a lifetime, but the downside is that it’s very heavy and difficult to move. It can also heat up in the sun, making it dangerous to touch in extreme cases, and it can rust if left in the rain.
  • Wood – Wood usually requires more maintenance than other materials, but it’s strong, sturdy and boasts a timeless look.
  • Wicker – Wicker outdoor lounges and other furniture items are lightweight and durable. They’re easy to move around and usually require only minimal upkeep.

Practicality

Practicality and functionality should play a big part in your decision making process. After all, there’s no point spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on wicker outdoor lounges, wooden tables or plastic dinner sets if you won’t be able to fit them into the space you have available. It’s therefore imperative that you measure the space where you plan to put your new outdoor furniture and make sure to allow plenty of room for movement.

Aesthetics

Aesthetics are important when it comes to outdoor furniture sets. While this isn’t the only factor, it’s crucial to make sure you’re buying a piece of furniture that you like the look of and that will also complement your existing decor. One of the great things about outdoor furniture is that it comes in a wide range of styles, so whether you’re interested in wrought iron tables or wicker outdoor lounges, there’s sure to be an item that fits well and matches your space’s existing look.
