How To Build A 10×20 Gable Storage Shed

June 21, 2019 by Lauren Palmer

There are sheds of different kinds, all with their own unique designs. Storage sheds are one of the most common structures you will find in most homes, and the good thing is that you do not have to spend a lot of money to build them. Fortunately, you can do it yourself (DIY). Yes, it might seem like a difficult task at first, but when you take your time during the planning stages, you will come to realize that it is quite doable. Besides saving up a few coins by doing it yourself, you are also able to customize the shed to your liking to serve its purpose.

Storage sheds come in different dimensions depending on how big your space is as well as your storage requirements. Today, however, we will be focusing on how to build a 10×20 storage shed. Getting the dimensions right is one of the most important stages as it will guide you on the quantity of materials you should buy. Also, it is important to prepare the land where you intend to put up the shed beforehand. If you have to clear the vegetation or remove any clutter, then do the necessary.

Below are a few steps that will guide you on how to build the 10×20 shed and eventually turn your idea into reality;

1. Do material shopping

What is it that you need for construction? What material do you intend to use? How much will it cost you? These are some of the questions you need to have answers to before you even go shopping. To help you come up with a comprehensive shopping guide, you can make use of free shed plans or shed premiums that are available online, most of which are quite affordable. Most of these premium 10×20 shed plans have a detailed list of what you can DIY and what you will be required to buy. Also, alongside the material list, go for a 10×20 shed plan that has a price quotation. This will, in turn, give you insight on the intended amount you could spend while shopping for the materials. However, while going for shopping, visit reputable stores that have a good track record of selling quality materials. At the end of the day, you want the shed to be long-lasting, and that is only possible if you purchase quality materials.

2. Start the shed construction

After getting all the materials in order, it is now time to get to work. First, you need to get the foundation right. The foundation is basically what will determine the lifespan of the shed. Build the floor frame, then at the right dimensions, fit it to the skids. You can use nails, bolts or nuts to secure the frame to the skids. Next thing you want to do is build the wall frames of the gamble 10×20 shed. While making the wall frames, you need to fit the walls vertically and align the edges to fit perfectly to the bottom plats. Also, remember to leave space for the windows.

After the walls and the windows are in place, your gable shed is almost ready now; the remaining thing is now the roof. The roof adds some sophistication to the gable shed and the fact that there are many roofing materials gives you the freedom to choose one that will add some glam to the whole structure. An important thing you need not forget is installing gutters on the roof. The gutters are a great way of harvesting water during the rains.

3. Install door and window locks

The fact that the shed is a storage location means that there is a need to secure the valuables that you will be placing in there. As such, you should install both door and window locks. You want to be very particular when choosing the locks. Go for locks that are not easy to tamper with.

4. Paint the walls

At this point, the 10×20 gable storage structure is basically ready. The shed, being a storage location, does not mean it should not look beautiful. You can decide to paint both the interior and exterior parts of the shed simply to add some glam. Choose a paint color that blends in with the color of the main house. Well, you can choose to either have a color similar to the one painted on your house or opt for a different color so long as it blends in.
