Metal Roof vs. Shingles Cost Comparison

August 25, 2022 by Lauren Palmer

When deciding on your roofing material, the main factor you are likely to consider is the cost. Obviously, a new roof is no small expense, so it’s important to find the best option for your situation and the money you are spending. Let’s do an analysis of metal roofing vs. shingle roofing costs to help you make the best decision.

Metal Roofing Costs

Not only does metal roofing material cost more, but you will also need to consider the additional costs that will apply to the installation process of a metal roof. While asphalt shingles are incredibly common, metal roofs are rare, so it’s likely that only a handful of experienced roofing professionals will have the expertise to install the new roof.

On top of that, there are special tools and materials required for metal roofing that are not as common or simple as asphalt shingle roofs.

For a roof of 2,000 square feet, you can expect to pay around a total of 10,000-$18,000. This estimate includes materials, labor, and any other associated costs.

Asphalt Roofing

Asphalt roofing on the other hand is much easier to install and requires less expertise. Therefore, labor costs will be significantly reduced and the amount of time it will take will also be less.

You can expect to pay between $5,000 and $10,000 for a complete asphalt roof replacement on a 2,000-square-foot roof.

Comparing Repair and Maintenance Costs

Metal Roofing Repair

Similar to the installation and replacement costs, repairs will usually be more expensive for metal roofing. It is worth keeping in mind, however, that due to the durability of metal roofs, repairs and maintenance will be far less frequent.

Asphalt Roofing Repairs

Asphalt shingles are much easier to replace and repair when the need arises, though this will happen more frequently with this type of roofing than with metal roofing.
