Which One is Better: More Electrical Outlets or Extension Cords?

August 9, 2018 by Lauren Palmer

If you are a tech geek, or if you use more than a few kitchen appliances for making fantastic meals, you’re probably familiar with the problem of not having enough electrical outlets. This is when you might start wondering whether you should install more electrical outlets or simply get a few extension cords. So, to help you make the right decision, here’s what you should know about extension cords and electrical outlets.

Convenience

When it comes to convenience, extension cords are definitely easier to handle. They allow you to plug in more devices than one, and they let you use the devices wherever you want; you are not limited by the length of the appliance’s cable. Just keep in mind that you should never plug one extension cord into another. After all, they are designed to go into the wall outlet only.

Also, try not to cover the cords, because the cord part can overheat when covered by a carpet or furniture. This is why it might be safer to install more power outlets if you plan on using them for years to come.

Budget

When it comes to your investments, buying an extension cord might be cheaper than installing a new power outlet. However, extension cords deteriorate over time much faster than power outlets, so you’d have to replace them more frequently. Again, in the long run, it could get expensive, which is why you should consider installing new power outlets if it’s something you’re going to need for more than a few months.

Power

If the devices you plan on using are a bit more power-demanding, like computers and mini stoves, it might be a better idea to plug them into the wall than the extension cord. This is because most extension cords cannot handle very high wattage, and this could impact their safety. So, when buying extension cords, make sure they can fit your needs. Also, don’t overload the extension cords for the same reason.

Aesthetics

Needless to say, extension cords can look quite messy, especially if you need more than one or two. Not to mention how easily you can trip over them if you forget that they are there. Of course, there are ways of organizing them, but you can never hide them completely. So, aesthetically, electrical outlets might be a bit more pleasing to the eye.

Choosing

When it comes to choosing electrical cords, don’t buy the first type you find in the nearest store. Good electrical cords need to be approved. If you want to use them outdoors, you should also look for those that have been marked as safe for that purpose. On the other hand, if you want to install a few more electrical outlets, a professional electrician from Sydney can help you get the kind of outlet you need.

Checking the safety

If you want to use an extension cord that hasn’t been used in a while, you should first make sure it’s safe to use. The insulation of the cord should look good and the connection of the cord and the plug should be in good shape. Similarly, if an electrical outlet emits a burning smell or smoke, it’s not safe to use, and you should call an electrician to inspect it.

Even though using extension is a bit more convenient, it’s not something you should rely on too much. They tend to get very hot when used for longer periods of time, so if you need something that will last for a while, you should go for electrical outlets. On the other hand, if you do need a temporary solution and you have a shortage of electrical outlets in your home, feel free to get a few quality extension cords. Finally, regardless of which option you choose, do your research, and make sure to stay safe at all times.
