Electricity affects almost everything we do on a daily basis. Think about when the lights flicker during a storm. We’re just waiting for the darkness, but we might not understand the chaos that awaits us once our dependable electrical circuit is off for an extended period of time. Technology has come so far and impacts us in a positive way each day.
Modern Day Technology
Flipping a switch can start our entire day. We rely on the switch that powers up coffee to get our own motors going in the morning. We plug in the curling iron to fix our hair. We grab the remote control to flip on the morning news. Without electricity, most of us are in a bind. Of course, some people still like to live in societies without modern technology. That’s great for them, but for most people, the flip of the switch is important to everyday activities. In modern day society, people rely on electricity at work and at home. Weekend projects are done with power tools, electric appliances help cook gourmet dinners, and hot showers are powered by water heaters. Today’s modern society uses electricity throughout the day without even realizing it. Little things we use every single day without thinking about them suddenly become an issue because we can’t use them. Electricity might seem trivial when we think about unplugging, but it’s a huge thing in our everyday lives.
Smart Technology
Smart home technology is a growing trend in many homes. The $20 billion dollar industry is changing the way people live their lives. From smart televisions that allow you to surf the Internet then stream shows, to smart thermostats that regulate temperature depending on the outside weather. Computers connected to the Internet give you access to pretty much anything in the world. Whether you want to online shop or make some money working, it can all be done at your fingertips. This is all powered by electricity. There are even smart coffee makers which let your GPS signal connect to it enabling the coffee to start brewing so you get it when you are home from work. What about a smart slow cooker that begins at just the right time from the touch of a button on your phone? Smart technology and appliances make life easier and let you focus on things you want instead of all of the chores.
Chaos
It often seems like chaos when the electricity goes out for an extended period of time. Many people start posting to social media from their phones, calling the electrical company and wondering overall what is going on. We light candles, pull out the flashlights and start getting out books to keep us entertained. No, the world isn’t coming to an end, but for a world fueled by electricity, we are often slammed with the realization of how much we need it in our daily lives. The food in the fridge will soon go bad without the electrical currents, the air inside the house must be kept warm or cold depending on the weather outside, and most people cannot even get out of the garage without power.
Electricity Dependency
Electrical usage continues to rise as people depend on it more on a daily basis. Sometimes it’s nice to turn off the world and just enjoy time together, but on a daily basis, electricity is a necessity. The bigger picture of factories working to create new products cannot be done in the dark. Big news events and weather warnings travel much faster with television and radios than the telegraph of yesterday. Workplaces function mainly with the use of computers and the Internet. The modern-day fun of social media and e-mail is powered with phone chargers and computer plugs. Video games full of hours of entertainment are powered up with electricity. People love electricity for work and fun. It powers our lives with entertainment, works with us to maintain a household, and lends its hand in the working world to make more money with more production. Our ancestors made it through life without electricity, but there’s no question life is a lot easier today than yesterday.
