Recognize and Combat Financial Stress

May 15, 2018 by Lauren Palmer

Almost every stressor in life is rooted in finances. While some stress can be associated with relationship issues, those issues are usually linked in some way to a lack of money by at least one individual in the relationship. No matter what the causes of financial stress in your life may be, there are choices that you can make that will lead to improving personal finances in your future.

Insufficient Earnings

Having a job that does not pay you enough to live comfortably means that the job you have is a constant creator of stress. You deal every single day with the struggle to get yourself motivated just to crawl out of bed and get ready to go to a workplace that is trapping you in a lifestyle that is far from what envisioned for yourself when you were younger. While it may not be conducive to your situation for you to quit, you can try to improve your earnings by asking for a raise or for overtime. If those are not options at your job, you might have no other choice but to make the tough choice to seek employment elsewhere.

Overwhelming Bills

If your bills are out of control, your level of stress is also likely to be out of control. You may think that your only option is to dramatically increase your earnings or turning to easy cash loans on a routine basis. but that is not necessarily true. Before you consider finding a new job or borrowing money, you should consider eliminating some of the unnecessary bills that you may have in the first place. Maybe you do not need such an expensive plan for your mobile phone? Maybe you could live without cable? Oftentimes, though, you can talk to the companies that are the source of your bills and ask for lower rates.

Tax Burdens

Owing back taxes can be scary. You might be aware that the IRS or other revenue collection service could come after your earnings and seize your bank accounts. That is a stressful thought. But if you do owe thousands of dollars in taxes, your stress will only be alleviated after you decide to take some action. You can talk to the tax collection agency and attempt to reach a settlement or payment plan that you can keep up with.

Economic Uncertainty

Nobody knows the future. When it comes to the economy, your guess about what the future holds is as good as any. With the constant development of new technology, many jobs are at risk of being taken over by robots. Where does that leave you? It leaves you with a feeling of stress. But you can combat this stress by finding multiple sources of income and trying to choose occupations that require specialized skills.

Having No Emergency Fund

When you live paycheck to paycheck, you are always dealing with the stress that stems from the fear of losing your income. How would you survive if you lost your job tomorrow? Stop stressing about this constant possibility by creating an emergency fund and setting aside as much as you possibly can from each paycheck. Take on a second job or other means of making side money if necessary. As you watch your emergency fund grow, your stress will slowly disappear.

Financial stress does not have to be the central theme of your existence. While it can be tough to overcome, thriving is possible. It is all about the choices you make today. Those choices will dictate what stresses you encounter tomorrow and for the rest of your time on this planet.
