What Makes Wax Worms Incredible Feeder Insects for Reptiles

January 29, 2021 by Lauren Palmer

Not just dogs but pet reptiles also require treats from time to time. Along with treats, it is also important that you feed your pet reptiles food rich in nutrients. You can find all this goodness and more in wax worms.

Besides helping clean up our world by eating plastic, wax worms are also the right food choice for your pet reptiles. If you are interested in raising wax worms, you can know all about it from sites like https://www.topflightdubia.com/wax-worms.

Here’s what makes wax worms reptile’s a go-to nutritional food:

Makes a Good Treat

Reptiles like leopard geckos love to feed on wax worms as they are very fatty and will make a scrumptious meal. So wax worms can be fed to reptiles as occasional treats as well.

Sometimes the reptiles tend to get addicted to wax worms and refuse to feed on other foods. So keep an eye on the amount of worms you feed them.

Before feeding, you can dust the worms with calcium powder for added nutrition and goodness. In case your reptile is underweight or recovering from any illness, you can include wax worms in their diet to increase their fat stores and calcium.

Their Nutritional Value

When you feed wax worms in moderation to your reptile, it will increase their body’s nutritional content and keep them healthy. Both the larvae and adults can be fed to reptiles, especially for the sick ones, to help them recuperate.

Waxworms contains 61% moisture, 39 % of protein, and 52% of fat. They are very high in fat and have a calcium and phosphorous ratio of 1:15.

Feed it to them in shallow, escape-proof dishes and add calcium supplements to balance the ratio of nutrients.

They Are Best For Sick Reptiles

If your reptile is recovering from tail loss or other illness, wax worms will be the right food as they come packed with fats. You can also feed them to your reptiles, which are underweight and sick.

Especially for female leopard geckos, they will gain back the strength if you feed them wax worms all through the breeding season during their heavy egg-laying time.

Favorite for Many Reptiles

From bearded dragons to chameleons, neon tree dragons, brown anole, geckos, and three-toed box turtle, prefer wax worms for treats. Even some amphibians like salamanders, newts, and frogs have a liking to wax worms.

So if you have any of these reptiles as pets, you don’t have to go around looking for specific treats. All reptiles favor wax worms.

Requires Low Maintenance

Waxworms are one of the feeder insects, which require very low maintenance. They usually come in tubs filled with substrates like sandpaper, bran, or oats. You can store them in the same box for a long time.

When left at room temperature, they can turn into moths. But if you cool them down, it will slow down their life cycle and bodily processes, and they will stay as worms. They can thrive for many days without food in cold conditions. You can stack them in the door of your refrigerator.

Waxworms are an excellent treat if added to your reptile’s diet. Especially if you notice your pet under-eating or pacing without an appetite, you can treat them with a dish of wax worms to get them to eat more and grow healthy.
